Hewlett Anderson: Music

Whispering

(Hewlett Anderson)
July 24, 2009
Scott Anderson & Scott Carpenter

This song began as an instrumental that I wrote one night when I was experimenting with drum loops from a software program called "Stylus".  I wrote the music up to the bridge ("everywhere I go...) and then quit for the night.  The piece sat on my hard drive for a long time as a demo, with me humming the melody, since there were no words.

Some time later I had the idea to approach an old friend, Scott Carpenter, about the idea of trying to write some lyrics together.  We had collaborated in high school on a couple of songs, but nothing since and it sounded like it could be fun.  I gave him the demo.

Scott came back with most of the first verse.  My contribution was the line "You are everywhere but where are you?"  Then I wrote the second verse, the bridge and the last refrain.  It was a great experience to collaborate with Scott.  Hope you enjoy...

Scott Anderson, 2009

In a sea of crowded faces I sense You everywhere I go.

It's the pain of past remembering - a pain from so long ago.

I hear You whispering, hear You whispering Your call to me.

I see You here, I feel You there

You are everywhere but where are You?

In a sea of lonely places I'm searching for You on and on

In a world of cold embraces a still, small voice echoes on.

Still I hear You whispering, hear You whispering Your call to me.

You're in the air I'm breathing.

You are everywhere but where are You?

Everywhere I go, everything I know

Says it must be so.

But if I can't reach You, can't make it be

Will You hear me?

Oh, do You hear me whispering, hear me whispering my call to You?

If you hear it will You answer, build the mystery, start my search anew?

So I'll keep listening for Your whispering Your call to me.

I see You here, I feel You there.

You are everywhere, but where are You?
